What Happens at Your Cleaning Appointment
Step 1 - Full exam and digital X-rays
Your hygienist starts by checking your teeth, gums, tongue, and the soft tissue in your cheeks for anything that's changed since your last visit. If you're due for X-rays - usually once a year for healthy adults, more often if we're tracking something specific - we use low-radiation digital sensors that produce an image in seconds. This first 5 to 10 minutes catches early decay, gum recession, and oral cancer signs before they turn into bigger problems.
Step 2 - Scaling above and below the gumline
Scaling is the part of a cleaning that removes hardened tartar (calculus) from your teeth. Brushing and flossing can't get this off - once tartar forms, only a hygienist with the right tools can remove it. Your hygienist works around each tooth, paying close attention to the gumline where bacteria collect. If you have any pocketing or early gum disease, scaling reaches a few millimeters below the gumline. We use both ultrasonic scalers (small vibrating tips that loosen heavy buildup) and hand instruments for precision around the gumline. If anything is sensitive, tell us - we can apply topical numbing or slow the pace.
Step 3 - Polish and optional fluoride
After scaling, your hygienist polishes your teeth with a fine paste and a soft rubber cup. Polishing removes surface stains from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco, and leaves the tooth surface smooth so plaque has a harder time sticking back on. If you're prone to cavities or have early decay, a fluoride treatment at the end of your appointment adds a protective layer that strengthens enamel for the next several months.
Routine, Deep, or Periodontal Maintenance - Which Do You Need?
Routine cleaning (prophylaxis)
This is the standard six-month cleaning for healthy gums. If your gums don't bleed, your bone level on X-rays is normal, and you don't have any pocket depths over 3 mm, you're a routine cleaning patient. Most adults are. Insurance plans typically cover two routine cleanings a year at 100%.
Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing)
Deep cleaning is the treatment for early gum disease (gingivitis or early periodontitis). Your hygienist scales further down the root surface to remove bacteria from below the gumline, then smooths the root so gum tissue can reattach. This is usually done in two visits - one half of the mouth at each visit - and may include local anesthetic. Insurance often covers part of this once we document the diagnosis with periodontal charting.
Periodontal maintenance
Once you've had a deep cleaning, you don't go back to routine cleanings - your gums need closer monitoring. Periodontal maintenance is a cleaning every 3 to 4 months instead of every 6, with extra attention to the areas that previously had pocketing. This is what keeps gum disease from coming back.
Gross debridement
If it's been more than a few years since your last cleaning, sometimes we need to do a gross debridement first - a preliminary cleaning that removes the heavy outer layer of buildup so we can actually see your teeth and gums. After that, we figure out whether a routine or deep cleaning is the right next step.
Meet Dr. Dhiren Zaveri
Dr. Dhiren Zaveri grew up in Knoxville. He spent afternoons at his uncle's dental practice in India during middle school, which is where the interest in dentistry took root. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Oklahoma College of Dentistry, then came back home to Knoxville to open Knox Valley Dental and serve the community he grew up in.
Two parts of his training shape how patients experience the practice. Dr. Zaveri is Kois Center-trained, which is one of the most rigorous post-graduate continuing-education programs in dentistry - heavy on diagnosis, treatment planning, and evidence-based decision-making. He also practices biomimetic dentistry, a restoration philosophy that preserves as much of your natural tooth structure as possible rather than reducing more than the problem requires. Both shape your cleaning visit too: a more careful exam catches issues earlier, and any restoration we recommend down the road will be the smallest one that actually solves the problem.
He's a member of the American Dental Association, attends several continuing-education conferences every year, and is active in local and national organized-dentistry groups. Outside the office, Dr. Zaveri hikes, travels, works out with friends, follows the Knoxville food scene, and cheers on the Vols. Getting to Our Office From Concord
Concord is one of the closest communities to our office - about 3 to 5 minutes east on Kingston Pike, depending on traffic and the side of Concord you're starting from. From Concord Park or the Northshore Drive corridor, take Northshore Drive north to Kingston Pike and turn east; we're a short hop past the Town Center at Farragut on the right. If you're coming from the Pellissippi side of Concord, take Pellissippi Parkway south to the Kingston Pike exit and turn east - slightly longer but more predictable in heavy traffic.

If you have dental insurance, you'll usually pay nothing out of pocket for two routine cleanings a year - they're part of the preventive coverage on most PPO plans. We're in-network with most major plans and file your claims directly. If you're not sure whether your plan covers us, call (865) 244-2828 and we'll verify before your appointment.
If you don't have insurance, our New Patient Special is $109 for a full new patient exam, X-rays, and oral cancer screening, plus a $40 healthy-mouth cleaning if your gums are healthy. The Adult Membership Plan is $29 per month with a $49 lifetime activation fee and includes two cleanings a year, two exams, X-rays as needed, one fluoride treatment, one emergency exam, and 15% off other treatments - the math works out to about $232 of savings a year for someone who keeps up with twice-yearly cleanings. The Child Membership is $28 per month with the same structure (covers kids 12 and under). The Periodontal Membership is $59 per month for patients who need quarterly maintenance cleanings.

How often should I get a dental cleaning?
Most adults with healthy gums benefit from a cleaning every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, your dentist may recommend every three or four months. The American Dental Association is the right source for general guidance - your individual frequency depends on your exam findings.
Do dental cleanings hurt?
Most patients describe a routine cleaning as mildly uncomfortable at most - there's some pressure and the occasional ping of an ultrasonic tool against a tooth. If you have sensitive gums or a lot of buildup, the first cleaning may be more intense. Tell your hygienist if anything is sharp or painful and they'll adjust.

By the time something hurts, the treatment is usually more involved than it would have been if it had been caught at a six-month exam. The point of routine cleanings isn't the cleaning itself; it's the exam that comes with it.
What if I haven't been to the dentist in years?
You're not alone, and you won't be lectured. We see patients all the time who haven't had a cleaning in five or ten years. The first visit is a thorough exam, X-rays, and either a routine cleaning, a deep cleaning, or a gross debridement, depending on what we find. We'll lay out the options and the costs before we start any treatment.
Do you treat children?
Yes. Our Child Membership ($28 a month) covers two cleanings, exams, X-rays, and a fluoride treatment per year, plus 15% off other treatments. We see kids from age three through high school. The Children's New Patient Special is $89 for a first visit if you don't have insurance.
What should I do before my cleaning appointment?
Brush and floss as you normally would, eat something light if your appointment is around mealtime, and bring your insurance card and a list of any medications you take. If you have any concerns or specific questions, write them down - easy to forget once you're in the chair.
My family is at Concord Park most weekends - is the office open Saturdays for cleanings?
Our regular hours are Monday through Friday - we're closed Saturday and Sunday. Our latest weekday slot is 7 PM on Thursday, which works well for families who can't break away during the week.
